Encounters 2018 - 2020
Wieke Eringa, former Artistic Director of Yorkshire Dance, talks to us about our Encounters Festivals:
"Encounters will bring together inspiring dance artists with a diverse crowd to share food, conversation, participation and performance in Leeds. We’re welcoming everyone – those who don’t normally come to performances as well as those who frequently do.
We believe dance can make the world a better place. We know it can create deep connections between different sorts of people drawn together by seeing, and talking about, the kinds of works you’ll experience at Encounters.
Yorkshire Dance is building a community of activists – from all walks of life – around performances that address some of the big questions of our age."

Quotes from participants -

"A wonderful chance to dance with other families. So much fun! I'd like to do this every day!"
"Enjoyed the warm up games and felt comfortable being a parent and non-dancer, really enjoyed TC Howard's workshop and realised I don't need to be a born dancer to enjoy movement and expression. Made me and my son smile throughout!"

Make A Dance In A Day - For women and girls aged 8 to 108 (and beyond).
Explore what it means to be a girl, a woman, a mother or a daughter through dance. Get to know each other through a new focus: What stories do we want to tell, what feels good, what is fun? And do we care who’s watching?
We will challenge stereotypes and unpack what it means to us to be female since #MeToo. We'll share what we've created with friends and family at the end of the day.

Encounters Family
“It takes courage to become who you really are.” E.E Cummings
to take up space
to surprise and expand
to be seen to be heard to watch to enjoy
to be responsive and generous and follow your nose
to feel connected and playfully interact with the world around you
to get a glimpse of all the things you are and are yet to become
The Joy Of Moving
A safe space is created for those from all walks of life to join in this playful exploration of moving, connecting, self-care, affirmation and joy. Life gives us plenty of reasons to disconnect, but this is an ideal chance to re-connect with your body and fall in love with it again. We especially welcome members of the LGBTQ+ communities of different ages and ethnicities.
Ageless Workshop
Inspired by the newly devised piece for care homes, A Tree, A Tub and a Moment in Time, this intergenerational class celebrates the joy of moving together, finding connections and being playful. This is an intergenerational class open to all aged 2 – 102.
